Hummingbird

(Fraser’s Hermit Hummingbird by John
Gould, 1804-1881, English ornithologist
and painter)

In the right hands, a sweet nothing can turn into poetry.

HUMMINGBIRD

Suppose I say summer,
write the word “hummingbird,”
put it in an envelope,
take it down the hill
to the box. When you open
my letter you will recall
those days and how much,
just how much, I love you.

~ Raymond Carver (1938-1998), American short story writer and poet
