Winter Love
(Awaiting the Train, Bertherville, Quebec by Kathleen
Morris, 1893-1986, Canadian painter)
We now come to the end of January. This month, we’ve been listening in the snow, taking heed of the silence.
Our final poem on this theme proposes that silence signifies more than an absence of sound.
WINTER LOVE
I would like to decorate this silence,
but my house grows only cleaner
and more plain. The glass chimes I hung
over the register ring a little
when the heat goes on.
I waited too long to drink my tea.
It was not hot. It was only warm.
~ Linda Gregg, born 1942, American poet
