ABC

(Robert Pinsky, poet laureate, 1997-2000)

ABC

Any body can die, evidently. Few
Go happily, irradiating joy,

Knowledge, love. Many
Need oblivion, painkillers,
Quickest respite.

Sweet time unafflicted,
Various world:

X = your zenith.

~ Robert Pinsky, born 1940, American poet and translator

After not one but two moments of reflection, I've reached the verdict that somewhere Pinsky must have done better than this...

I hope I wasn't unfair in my selection. The verse is clever and a break from the more pensive poems by the laureates posted here in the last weeks.
