(The Whittling Boy by Winslow Homer, 1836-1910,
American artist)
What was true a thousand years ago still applies today. We all want the best for our children.
ON THE BIRTH OF HIS SON
Families, when a child is born,
Want it to be intelligent.
I, through intelligence,
Having wrecked my whole life,
Only hope the baby will prove
Ignorant and stupid.
Then he will crown a tranquil life
By becoming a Cabinet Minister.
~ Su Tung-p'o, also known as Su Shi (1037-1101), Chinese poet and satirist
